CTEK vs Redarc vs Victron — Which DC-DC Charger Is Best for South African 4x4s?
Choosing the right DC-DC charger is the most important decision in any dual battery build. Get it wrong and you'll either undercharge your auxiliary battery, damage your vehicle's smart alternator, or find yourself with a flat battery 200km from the nearest town.
At Alpha Accessories, we've installed all three of these brands across hundreds of 4x4 builds at our Centurion fitment centre. Here's our honest, experience-based comparison.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a DC-DC charger or can I use a relay isolator?
On modern vehicles with smart alternators (Toyota Hilux GD-6, Ford Ranger T7/T8, Land Cruiser 300 Series), a relay isolator will not charge your auxiliary battery correctly. A DC-DC charger is essential. On older vehicles with traditional alternators, a relay isolator can work but a DC-DC charger still provides significantly better charging performance.
Can the CTEK D250SE charge a lithium battery?
Yes — the CTEK D250SE has a dedicated lithium (LiFePO4) charging profile. Make sure to select the correct battery type during setup.
What solar panel size works with the Redarc BCDC1225D?
The Redarc BCDC1225D accepts solar input up to 32V and 20A. A single 200W panel is ideal for most overlanding setups. For larger solar arrays, consider the BCDC1240D (40A version).
How long does a DC-DC charger installation take?
Most installations at our Centurion centre take 2–3 hours. A full dual battery build including battery box, wiring, fusing, and solar integration typically takes 3–5 hours. WhatsApp us to book.
Is Redarc or CTEK better for a Toyota Hilux?
Both work excellently on the Hilux GD-6. CTEK is the better choice for simplicity and value. Redarc is better if you're adding solar and doing extended remote travel. Our fitment team can advise based on your specific Hilux model and how you use it.
